At the beginning of the story, the main character - actress Julia Lambert has achieved everything she could only dream of.
After graduation, Julia Lambert got a job in one of the provincial theaters.
At the Langdon Theater, Miss Lambert met her future husband Michael. He was incredibly handsome and just as incredibly talentless.
Moreover, the author reveals the image of a passionate but still unmarried girl. Being secretly in love with Michael Gosselin, Julia wants to become his mistress, which she almost openly declares to him, which speaks of her determination and rebellious nature:
Julia fell in love with him at first sight, but could not achieve reciprocal love - perhaps because Michael was completely devoid of temperament both on stage and in life; but he admired her performance. Michael was the son of a colonel, graduated from Cambridge, and his family did not overly approve of his theatrical career.
Julia was keenly aware of all this and contrived to create and play the role of a girl who could please his parents. Michael had his own view of marriage, he believed that by marrying an actress, he would gain popularity, and his wife would fade into the background and become a burden for him.

Julia knew perfectly well that he was not in love with her. She consoled herself that he loved her as best he could, and thought that when they were married, her passion would awaken in him a passionate response. In the meantime, she called for help with all her tact and showed maximum restraint.
She knew she couldn't afford to pester him. She knew that he should not be a burden to him, that he should never feel obliged to sacrifice anything for her ... and, suspecting that her stage success strengthens his feeling, Julia worked like a hard labor to play well.
Julia is a very reserved and practical woman. Her main hobby is playing on stage. She is ready to completely devote herself to her favorite work.
Her relationship with her husband is not truly sincere. Falseness and pretense are everywhere. In fact, each of them, for the most part, does not care about their partner. All of this looks more like friendship than family relationships.
Julia always plans her behavior with this or that person in advance, trying on exactly the mask that allows her to make the right impression. That is why the behavior of the young accountant Tom Fennel, who becomes her lover, becomes such a surprise for her.
That is why Julia started an affair on the side. Of the key characters, in addition to Julia, the young accountant Thomas Fennel can be distinguished. His shyness and at the same time passion could interest Julia. She falls in love with him.
But Julia's husband, Michael, never showed his attitude to what was happening. In the Gosselin-Lambert family, there were not only quarrels and scandals, but also discussion of what was happening.
The middle-aged woman is shrouded in boredom. Playing in the theater is much more interesting for her than real life. She does not receive love from her husband. She wants some new sensations and emotions.
Julia realizes that she is behaving very stupidly and incorrectly, but she cannot do anything. She sees Thomas as a young and ambitious youth. The woman even helps him in every possible way with money and tries to accustom him to secular society so that he does not leave her.
Michael turned out to be quite an enterprising person. After he learned about the possible relationship between his wife and Tom, he offered to buy out Dolly de Vries's share, taking advantage of her weakness. He would never have believed that his wife could cheat on him with a boy. Until now it seemed to him that his wife loved him.
So, we understand that the life of actress Julia Lambert is not as beautiful and interesting as it might seem to the reader at first glance. The heroine is forced to play another role in her life, the role of a socialite, in reality, wishing for something completely different.
Probably, she would like a variety of life adventures, rebellious motives, but she is forced to maintain the image of a woman from high society who leads a measured life and does not allow her emotions to prevail over reason.
In the end, however, she repents to her husband because she has been unfair to him for many years. Michael still finds the strength to forgive his spouse and turns out to be the only person who is ready to accept her with all his shortcomings and sins.
Michael's generosity caused a storm of emotions in Julia's soul, as a result of which the heroine, in repentance, uses frank insults against her own personality.
The idea of the novel is to affirm the idea that it is the artists who reflect life, fill it with meaning. Finding this truth pacifies Julia and makes her happy.
I would like to say about the Julia Lambert family. Michael and Julia became spouses while still little-known actors. Julia was more talented on stage. She was also more temperamental, it was Julia who fell in love with Michael and was the initiator of this marriage.
Julia talks about Michael as a cold lover on stage. Considering that for Julia the theater is the whole world around, these words can be conditionally applied to family relationships.
Nevertheless, the alliance was strong. Moreover, they could not exist without each other. In light, they were the perfect match, it was the image of the family of Julia and Michael. Julia is the perfect mother and wife, Michael is the most handsome man in London.
For Michael, Julia was also part of a joint project in which he invested his life. Michael is a calculating person, even economical, which annoyed Julia in everyday life. But Julia had no plans to change this life. By and large, everything suited her.
Spouses have long been accustomed to playing the role of an ideal couple. There are no quarrels or scandals throughout the film. The game is played strictly according to the rules. But these rules also contain deep respect for each other, as for a partner, without which further life is impossible.
Michael Gosselin showed the utmost delicacy over the relationship between Julia and Tom. He never humiliated his wife and her lover and did not try to intervene. Moreover, Michael covered his wife in love so that the honor of the family would not suffer, he protected both the theater business and the brilliant future of his son.
Julia appreciated everything Michael did for her. She returned to the family bay, having beautifully revenged herself on Tom and his girlfriend, arranging all the figures that she inadvertently touched into place.
