The work “In Another Country” was written by Ernest Hemingway. It describes how people in wartime underwent rehabilitation in a hospital after being wounded. Here, the narrator tells us the story of a major who treated a hand.
Each of us has the traits of a brave man and a coward. It cannot be said unequivocally that the major was a brave man. We don’t know the whole life of this major, and it’s rather difficult to evaluate him from some events that we know about.
Based on the conversation with our narrator, I would say that the major wanted to be invulnerable he did not want these or those events to be able to hurt him. Apparently he wanted to be an iron man with a cold heart. He tried to convey this to interlocutor, shouting, on him that would he never married.
We can say for sure that he was literate enough to believe that his hand would be completely healthy. And with the same confidence we can say that he was disciplined. Without even believing that his hand would be healed, he still continued treatment every day.
I am sorry that with the major occurred such a misfortune as the death of his young wife, who died of pneumonia. Apparently, he loved her very much, was afraid to lose her, but nevertheless married her only after he had resigned, so as not to leave her a young widow. He with dignity endures her passing away from life, and even finds the strength in himself to apologize to the person on whom he has thrown out his anger. He is a strong man, because only strong people are not afraid to show their tears in public, not thinking that they will condemn him.
Perhaps I should say that the major was more brave than cowardly. It was just that as he grew older he became more and more aware of the weight of the human burden, which leded him to some outbursts of rage, behind which he hid his defenselessness to the inevitable events of life.
