What does the word “hero” mean? On the one hand, a hero is a role model. This is a person that is graced with perfect traits and abilities. His good deeds blow our mind and inspire us to be better. Hero is someone we want to be, but we can't. And we want to believe, that there are ideal people somewhere.
On the other hand, heroism is often associated with great risk and danger. When we say “hero” we imagine a hero of war facing danger in battle or a firefighter, who risks to his life everyday.
The theme of heroism, patriotism and self-sacrifice is very popular last time. Thanks to literature and cinema, we can learn many interesting life stories. And these true life stories can be an example of true heroism, which can never be compared to the stories of Batman or Spider-man. One of these stories shocked me.
I saw a biographical film “Hacksaw Ridge” some years ago. The main character of the film is a young man Desmond Doss, a soldier of the US Army during World War II. It 's amazing he went to war, because his religious beliefs forbade him not only to fight, but also to use a weapon. It was madness that a staunch Christian pacifist should go to war. But it was his voluntary decision. He believed it was possible to defend the country without weapons. He wanted to save, not kill, so he joined the army as a field medic.
He suffered a lot of difficulties and mental and physical pain before the battles began. He suffered the bullying and moral pressure of his fellow soldiers for his beliefs. He was tried by a military tribunal for refusal of trainings and using weapon. But these trials didn't break him, and he did not give up his beliefs. And he went to fight with others. But without weapons. All he had with him was a medical bag and his faith.
Desmond became a hero and was awarded the Medal of Honor for rescuing 75 soldiers. But he saved not only the lives of American soldiers, but also the lives of enemies. He stood by his morals: never take up arms and never kill.
