Hospital Staff

There are many people who contribute to the care while a patient stays in hospital. Numerous people and services work together to provide a patient with successful treatment in a hospital, from medical assessments and daily treatment to medication and catering. The key roles for staff in a hospital can be categorized into doctors (medical staff), nurses, allied health professionals, support staff. Different staff performs different roles in a hospital.

Medical staff. Doctors have different roles and responsibilities based on their level of experience and their medical specialty.

Senior consultant (staff specialist, visiting medical officer) is a doctor who sees patients at specific times, attends ward rounds and meetings at specific times.The senior consultant is in charge of a team of Doctors. A patient is admitted to hospital under the care of a consultant who develops a treatment plan.

Fellow has completed medical school and residency training, and is getting additional training in a particular subspecialty, e.g. heart surgery, and carrying out the research. .

The doctor on call is a physician who covers weekends, evenings, and other shifts when the attending doctor is off site. Doctors on call are there to answer questions and cover emergencies.

Registrar is a doctor who is training to become a specialist and supervises residents, interns and students. The registrar is the ward’s senior doctor and is usually contactable on site. Registrars usually work on 3 to 6 month rotations.

Resident looks after patients on the ward, a doctor who has graduated from the medical school and is now training in a medical specialty area. Residents have had at least one year working in a hospital. They can give some information but they have limited authority, they are supervised by attending physicians.

Interns are doctors who are in their first year after they have completed their university degree.

Student doctors are undergraduate medical students.

Nursing Staff. Nurses provide much of the day-to-day care in hospitals. They manage most of ongoing care and treatment in hospital and closely monitor a patient's condition and perform vital jobs like giving medicine and educating patients about self-care.

Nurse-in-charge (nursing manager or nursing unit manager) manages each ward or unit. Nursing Staff Management of each ward is under the direction of a Nurse-in-Charge

Associate nurse unit manager helps the nurse unit manager to run the ward and acts as the manager when the nurse unit manager is off site.

Nurse practitioner (NP) is a highly skilled nurse with an advanced level of training. NPs have a master's degree and board certification in their specialty having additional training in a particular area. NP often takes a person's medical history, does the initial physical exam, performs some tests and procedures, writes prescriptions, and treats minor illnesses and injuries.

Registered nurse (RN): A nurse who has completed a university degree. In hospital wards, most nurses will be RNs who provide a high level of day-to-day care and perform some minor procedures. RNs provide a critical link between the patient and the healthcare team. A RN gives medication, performs small procedures such as drawing blood, and closely follows a person's condition.

Advanced practice nurse (APN) is an RN who has taken additional training beyond nursing school.

Enrolled nurse (EN)is a nurse who has completed a certificate course. In hospital wards EN who has completed a certificate course provides basic medical care under the supervision of more senior nurses.

Licensed practical nurse (LPN) provides basic care. They help patients with tasks like bathing, changing wound dressings, and taking vital signs. LPN has at least 1 year of training.

Clinical nurse educator (CNE) works alongside nurses to give them additional education and support.

Clinical nurse specialist (CNS) or Clinical nurse consultant
(CNC) specializes in a particular area, e.g. Intensive Care, Aged Care or Cancer Care. They have extensive specialist knowledge and experience.

Allied health staff. Allied health professionals are university-educated practitioners who work as part of the multidisciplinary healthcare team. They assess, diagnose and treat conditions and work to prevent disease and disability. Some examples of allied health professionals include:

Social worker provides support and information to patients and families, and may help to arrange community services.

Occupational therapist\ Physiotherapist works with people to improve coordination and motor skills. He may arrange for equipment or modifications at home

Dietitian ensures that patients receive the correct diet and nutrition

Pharmacist reviews and prescribes medicines. They meticulously prepare medications, and monitor drug therapy for effectiveness, potential side effects, allergies and possible food and drug interactions.

Spiritual care.Hospital chaplains are available to provide scriptures or holy writings from patient’s specific faith tradition, help to access/receive religious sacraments, contact religious leaders from patient’s faith tradition and/or help with other spiritual needs.

Volunteers work throughout the medical center and are available to assist hospital staff and patients.

Support staff. Keeping a hospital running requires a great deal of organization and administration. During the hospital stay, a patient can see a wide range of support and administrative staff taking care of everything from laundry and meals to patient transport and maintenance.

All these people play an important role in the treatment and recovery of the patients.
