Hamlet comes before us as an honorable, vivid, passionate and emotional young man. We could say he is a complex character of many virtues, though susceptible to impulsiveness, blindness and dismay. What makes us think so? Let us take a look at the following.

His age has its touch on his demeanor, emotional state and comprehension of life itself. Neither a little boy nor a grown man he is young and this, apart from his overall passionate nature, makes him idealistic and willing to bring nothing but good.

The love and reverence for his father doesn’t seem to be the forced result of upbringing but Hamlet’s personal choice and his personal trait. The way he grieves and worships the memory of his father is utterly sincere and tells us about his innate ability for love and piety (“The grief for his father’s death made him lose all his gaiety.”) And still we should point out that his love and reverence to some extent join hands with blindness and unforgivingness towards his mother.

His troubled state about the unwise action of his mother (marriage to Claudius, the brother of murdered King of Denmark) lays stress on Hamlet’s sense of pride and honor. The loss of the throne was a lesser of his worries, the disgraceful action of his mother and her forgetfulness of her former husband troubled him much more. For him the name and the honor of his family were above the throne. Hamlet also possesses a sense of duty and allegiance to his vows, though takes it to an extreme and without considering the price of fulfilling.

With all the above-mentioned we could say that the genius of William Shakespeare conceived Hamlet to be well-suited, harmonious and natural for tradegy both personal and united. Hamlet is a character of two extremes both vice and virtue, self-deceiving, assured to have taken a righteous path while blindly taking bloody steps to vice. A tradegy no one is protected from.
