Appendix 1

Note on Synonymous Verbs

1. 
   To refuse – to reject – to deny
   

Torefuse – отказываться1) выполнить что-либо (употребляется с инфинитивом); 2) от чего-либо (употребляется с дополнением); быть отвергнутым (пассивная конструкция to be refused).

Toreject – отказываться решительно, категорически.

В отличие от refuse, не употребляется с инфинитивом, а только с

дополнением или в пассивной конструкции.

Todeny – отказывать удовлетворить желание, просьбу, потребность

кого-либо.

2. 
   To avoid – to evade – to escape
   

Toavoid – избегать, не прикладывая усилий, держаться в стороне от нежелательного.

Toevade – избегать активно, находить пути и средства для уклонения от нежелательного.

Toescape – избегать, благополучно миновать грозящую опасность как результат везения, а не усилий. После всех этих глаголов употребляются глаголы в ing –овой форме, а не инфинитив.

   To walk- to go – to come
   

Towalk– идти пешком, передвигаться на ногах.

Togo – идти. Когда в предложении указана цель передвижения, то употребляется глагол togo, а не towalk, даже если заведомо известно, что человек идет пешком.

Tocome – приближаться, приходить, достигать.

4. 
   To look for – to seek – to search
   

Tolookfor– искать что-либо конкретное.

Toseek - искать что-либо абстрактное.

Tosearch – искать с особой тщательностью, обыскивать.

5. 
   To get up – to stand up – to rise
   

Togetup – вставать с постели, подниматься, просыпаться.

Tostandup – вставать из сидячего или лежачего положения на ноги. Так говориться только о людях, и этот глагол никогда не уточняет с чего человек встал.

Torise – 1) вставать, подниматься из лежачего или сидячего положения или с чего-либо; 2) подниматься относительно прежнего уровня; 3) расти о показателях.

   To obtain – to receive – to get
   

Toobtain – получать с помощью определенных усилий, добывать.

Toreceive – получать без специальных усилий.

Toget – получать что-либо негативное (удар, шок, нагоняй, рану); синоним глаголов toobtain и toreceive в разговорной речи.

7. 
   To worry – to bother – to trouble
   

Toworry – волновать, пробуждать тревожные или неприятные мысли; волноваться, выходить из состояния душевного равновесия.

Tobother – беспокоить, доставлять хлопоты, надоедать с чем-либо.

Totrouble – тревожить, беспокоить, причинять неудобства, затруднения.

8. 
   To remember – to recall – to recollect
   

Toremember – вспоминать. Этот глагол наиболее часто употребляется в повседневной речи в отрицательных предложениях.

Torecall – вспоминать с усилием, но не слишком напряженным.

Torecollect– вспоминать со значительным усилием, стараться вспомнить, из деталей собирать одно целое. После всех синонимов этого ряда глагол употребляется в ing– овой форме, а не в инфинитиве.

9. 
   To allow – to let – to permit
   

Toallow – разрешать, позволять. Без указания лица после этого глагола используется только ing– овая форма глагола, а не инфинитив.

Tolet – позволять, разрешать. Этот глагол наиболее широко используется в разговорной речи и подразумевает отсутствие возражений, а не разрешение.

Topermit– разрешать, давать ясно выраженное согласие на что-либо. Подразумевается, что без такого разрешения действие не произойдет.
