Julia Lambert and Michael Gosselyn are main characters of the novel “Thearte” by William Somerset Maugham. In first ten chapters it’s possible to trace how their relationships changed in course of time.

They met in the theatre, directed by Jimmy Langton, when they were in their 20s. At that time Julia was one of the budding actress of England and Michael was a young tall handsome man with a military bearing. He was not very good as an actor, but girls admired him for his appearance and personal qualities. And Julia was a one of them. For quite a long time she tried to please him but he saw her only as a friend. But she was persistent and after a while she reached her purpose and Michael married her after one-year career trip in USA.

In the early years of their family life Julia really loved him and she always showed her great passion. But despite it, Michael wasn't as passionate as she was. And Julia sometimes she was angry or irritated by her husband's restraint, but she continued to love him very much. I should say that Michael had a lot of personal qualities that were annoying his spouse. One day the war came and Michael immediately enlisted in the army as an officer because his father was a military and he had reputation in the military society. Every day during the war Julia was very worried about Michael despite the fact that he served all the time on the staff. During his vacation periods they decided it was time to have a baby. And six months before the end of the war, she became pregnant. But three moths before the end of the war she understood that she don’t love him. When he returned at home and they continued they civil life, she didn’t know why and what reasons of the fact that she don’t love Michael, but it was a fact. Suddenly she understood that that some of his habits and behaviors irritated her. But she never showed it and for others and for Michael she continued to be a loving wife and a mother of the family.

For my opinion, despite Julia didn’t love her husband, she was a happy women, because she received a wide range of emotions from marriage both positive and negative.
