Ernest Hemingway is a remarkable writer of the 20th century, he lived only 62 years, but his life was full of adventures and struggles, defeats and victories, great love and exhausting work. He was a hunter and fisherman, a soldier and a writer. Of course, all the experienced events, losses, joys and sorrows were reflected in his works. A special place is occupied by his works related to the war. The writer shows it without decorations, the war in his works is a realistic and terrible tragedy for the destinies of those whom it affects. Only the strong will, with the help of loyal comrades and friends can help survive the difficulties of war, but it leaves its mark forever. It is such a hero who was touched by the war, is a major in the work "In another country".

The actions of the book take place in Italy during the First World War. We learn not so much about the major, he also, like the main character - a young American officer, is undergoing modern treatment of injuries in the hospital, which, supposedly, will help him to restore his damaged arm. The major does not believe that his hand can be restored. He is indifferent to this, although when we learn that the major was once a great swordsman, we realize that in fact he really wanted to heal his wounds. He also says nothing about war; he just comes to the prescribed procedures and sometimes gives the young officer lessons in Italian. The only time the major asks the main character is what he is going to do when he returns home. Hearing in response that the American officer is going to find a girl and marry, the major says that this is a bad idea, you cannot create attachments for what you lose in any case, you need to acquire only what is left with you forever. After some time, the protagonist understands what these words mean: when the major was undergoing treatment, a young beautiful girl, for whom the major really wanted to marry, died of an illness. And the major could not do anything about it, he could only cry because of lost love.

Do I think the major is a brave man? My answer is yes, because the major went to war, steadily overcame all difficulties and shed blood for his country.

Even brave people cry for losses, but not everyone is able to overcome all the difficulties in their path. Death in war is an everyday occurrence and people die not only on the battlefields but also in moments of calm. And it always be very difficult to put up with the losses of loved ones, but it is vital to find the strength to put an end to war.
