OXYGEN TENSION IN HUMAN SUBCUTANEOUS TISSUE
AS AN INFORMATIVE INDICATOR FOR CLINICAL
STUDIES OF OXYGEN UPTAKE IN TISSUES DURING
AGING AND FOR ASSESSMENT OF EFFICACY OF
GERIATRIC DRUGS

The results of investigations showed the determination of oxygen
tension in tissues (subcutaneous cellular tissue) by method of
polarography using functional tests (inhalation of oxygen, cross-
clamping of vessels) to be an informative clinical approach to the
study of intensity of tissue respiration. Considered were the
factors, which determine development of tissue hypoxia in the
elderly and old people. The decrease if intensity of tissue
respiration with age was shown to be mainly related with the age-
related changes in the activity of enzymes of biological oxidation.
Age-related decrease of tissue perfusion during aging resulted in
the disturbance of oxygen supply and had a negative effect on the
intensity of tissue respiration due to inhibition of enzymes of
biological oxidation, being an additional factor of development of
tissue hypoxia. The intake of vitamin complex "Geroton" by the
elderly and old persons with accelerated aging led to the increase
of intensity of tissue respiration, improvement general health
status, increase of physical working capacity, expansion of the
range of adaptive mechanisms of various organs and systems. The
above findings substantiate the need for intake of vitamin
complex for prevention and treatment of accelerated aging.
