V. Act out the situations

1. You must urgently fly from London to New York. Phone the travel agency or a booking office and book a seat on a plane. Give the date on which you want to leave London, If you want a return ticket, say so to the clerk. Say when you are planning to fly back to London.

2. You are at London airport. Ask someone how to get to the counter you want (you're flying by a British Airways plane). Thank the person who has shown you the way.

3. You are checking in at the British Airways counter. Unfortunately, you have excessive weight. Ask the agent how much you must pay extra Ask him if the plane has been called yet, and which gate it is boarding at.

4. You are meeting a friend at an airport in Canada. The plane hasn't arrived on time. Ask the clerk at the inquiry office why there is a delay and how long it is going to be. Thank him for the information he gives you.

5. You are going through security check. You don't want to put your camera on the belt, because you're afraid the film might be damaged. Ask the officer if he could check your camera by hand.

My Day-Off

Frankly speaking I do not usually have much of free time because I am a third-year student of a full-time department at the university now and have a lot to do for my classes. Besides I have to combine study with work – I am working as a technician in a small record-company in the evening after classes. So I am more or less free only in the week-ends.

On a day-off I like getting up at round about afternoon – a rare pleasure for me usually. So, I get up, have something tasty for brunch, watch a bit of TV – my favourites are programmes on some topics connected with science – like those on BBC Discovery or the like. I like Myth Busters for example – they always tell about something scientific in an unusual and funny way, like why we shouldn’t cook eggs in the microwave oven – it’s very fascinating. I also like watching films – an action or adventure or a detective story. I am not a huge fan of soaps, but I usually watch with pleasure such series as “House M.D.” for example. Closer to the evening I usually go to see my friends and we decide what to do next. Sometimes when there is some new blockbuster on, we can go to the cinema.

I have a small sister, she is too small to share most of my interests, but sometimes I take her to the Zoo, she likes to watch animals, or to a circus – she is a huge fan of watching the clowns of all sorts and trained doggies or cats. I personally also like circus but I prefer performances of gymnasts and horse-riders – when I was at school my parents sometimes took me to the country where we rode horses. I liked that very much. Sometimes we can go to the theatre or to the opera-house or to a concert of classical music which my parents are very fond of – they usually book tickets in advance, prepare nice clothes and make me also to wear something more formal than my usual jeans and a t-shirt.

c) In his story Daniel uses the word “like” in different meanings. Find sentences with this word and translate them. Make up your own sentences with this word in different meanings.

d) Use the words from the box in the sentences of your own:

e) Make up a plan of the text.

f) Make up some questions to the text of different types. Ask your partner to answer them using the information given by Daniel in the text.

Text 2. Writing a Review

a) Before reading answer the questions:

What do you like best: theatre or cinema? Why? Do you often go to the cinema (theatre)?

What was the last film (theatrical performance) you saw? Did you like it or not?

b) Read two opinions on the film “Titanic”. Find out which of the authors liked the film and which didn’t, and why.

“I heard about this film from my friend. He said it’s worth watching because it had been awarded so many Oscars for actors’ play, directing, music and of course – the special effects. The director of the film – James Cameron is said to be the king of special effects and that is true, in my opinion. I have never thought that a model ship – and I heard that in reality Cameron had sunk not a real cruise-ship, but a model – could look so real. These episodes when the ship was slowly going under water were truly scaring and shocking. The actor’s playing was also wonderful and so expressive. Cameron starred really marvelous actors in his film: all the audience were crying all together compassioning the poor lovers who lost their chance for happiness because of this catastrophe. The scenario had been written by a master too: the film lasted over two hours but I was never bored. The dialogues were lively; all the scenes had been thought through so as to hold the attention of the viewer up to the end. I liked the costumes too: the beautiful dresses of the main heroine – the part played by Kate Winslet especially. So I anybody asks my advice, I will strongly recommend to see this film.”

“Go watch this film only if you are a sentimental girl whose favourite occupation is reading silly sentimental love-stories, crying over different silly “poor things” who have nothing to do but fall in love with inappropriate people, and then suffer because they can never be together. Well, to be fair enough, I should say that Cameron, the film-director, has done a really great job – his film is really epic because of all this strikingly real scenes of the ship sinking. This view was really impressive. And the sound-track is also good. But the actors starring in the film didn’t produce any special impression on me. So frankly speaking I was bored and glad when this long film ended finally. If you ask me, I would never go to see this film again.”

c) In the reviews the authors used different words that show their attitude to the film. Find them all.

d) Here are some expressions that can help you to express your feelings about or your attitude to a show, a film, a book or a situation.

Make up your own examples with these words.

e) Try to remember a film you have recently seen. Discuss your impressions about it with your partner – speak about acting, voices, staging, the set, the costumes, the music and the characters. Say what struck or fascinated you most of all.

Dialogue 2.

Mary: It’s finally the week-ends. Any ideas?

Jennifer: Well, let’s see… We could go to the theatre for example – we haven’t been there for ages! And I hear there is some new show on with Konstantin Khabenskiy. They say it’s worth seeing.

Mary: Oh, no, please. I’m not a theatre-goer, you know it well – it’s all so boring and unnatural. Besides I am not a fan of Khabensky.

Jennifer: Ok, how about a cinema then?

Mary: Good idea! On Sunday there is “Wanted” on in Mir, with Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy starring. They say it’s a real hit.

Jennifer: Oh, I heard about it. If I’m not mistaken the director is Russian?

Mary: Abolutely right, it’s Bekmambetov.

Jennifer: Isn’t it the one who shot “Nightwatch”?

Mary: Yeah, and “Daywatch” too. And I think he is very talented. His films are usually so dynamic.

Jennifer: Totally agree. And the cast is usually very good – and that means acting is good, to say nothing of the special effects which his films are especially known for. Remember how the car was racing vertically along the wall of the hotel? Oh, that looked fantastic!

Mary: True. What struck me most was that everything looked so real. I hope, “Wanted” will be at least not worse. So, shall we go to the day performance or the evening one?

Jennifer: Let’s go to the day one and in the evening we can go to a café for example or have a walk.

Mary: No objections. Can’t wait!

a) WHAT SPORT? Read three people telling about their favourite kinds of sport. Pick out key-words which may help you to say what kind of sport is meant in each of the extracts.

Extract 1.

Well, I’ve been playing it since I was at school, since I was quite young, because my Dad was always very keen on it, and he used to give me lessons. And then at the university I joined the team and we used to play quite a lot. And it was quite fashionable at the moment, actually, all over Europe it’s becoming more fashionable. It’s often difficult to book courts – you’ve got to get in there a week before. I like it because it requires a lot of stamina. You’ve got to be fit. It’s constant running. It doesn’t take a long time – you can take half an hour at lunch-time, play, have a shower, and that’s it. Since it is not much standing around, it’s movement all the time, you feel absolutely exhausted at the end, and you can’t really play for two hours, though some people do. It’s usually for quite a short time. To play it you need a racket, a small ball and a net which separates you and your opponent.

Extract 2.

Well, I’ve been doing it every winter holiday since I can remember. I love it because your skills improve every time you do it. It’s a winter sport. You can do it in the mountains or in a forest. You enjoy this fast and beautiful exercise and it’s a pleasure to go to a café or bar after you do it, feeling pleasantly tired, and to have something hot to drink.

When you do it in the mountains there are two problems with it. Firstly, this is really expensive: you have to buy the equipment, and instructions are expensive too. Secondly it’s very dangerous – you can always break a leg while doing it. I like it because it helps to keep fit, but you are training not in a stuffy gym, but outdoors, in some beautiful place.

Extract 3.

I am a real fan of this kind of sport. I try to watch it on the stadium as it is more fun. The stands are packed and the people around you on the stand are cheering for the favourite team, all are excited, happy when their team scores and depressed and angry when they get scored. What I especially like about this game is that you never know what the result will be, even when a weak team is playing with a stronger team.

The success in this game depends on how quick the players can react, and that means they have to be fit, but not only physical abilities are important – tactics and strategy play great role here too – so it’s not only the contest of players, but of their coaches too.

c) Text 3. “At the Match”. Before reading answer the following questions:

1) Do you like watching sport programmes on TV? What kinds of sports do you enjoy watching?

2) What do you feel when you watch some sport events?

3) Are there any sportsmen that you particularly admire and who you consider an example for yourself? Why?

4) What is your attitude to professional sport? Have you ever had a wish to take up sports professionally?

Read the dialogue. What is it about? What opinions about the match do the speakers have?

“AT THE MATCH”

– Hi, Pit, where are you?

– Hi, Jonny, I am at a football match.

– Really? I thought you are not really keen on football?

– I am not, I just was bored and decided to try.

– Who’s playing?

– Have no idea. There is a team in white and a team in black. Each has a goal-keeper and 10 players: as a kind man near me explained, they are forwards and defenders.

– Have you chosen a team to cheer for?

– Yea, we are cheering for the whites. Now one of their forwards is running to the goal-area of the opponents. He scores … and misses. The ball hits the goal-post. What a pity.

– Oh, yes. I can hear the crowd sounds disappointed. What’s happening now?

– The opponents got the ball, and now they all are trying to break through our defense. No way! Ours are paying really skillfully. They are quick and their passes to each other are precise. What a tense struggle! It’s a real pleasure to watch them.

– Aha, you are starting to like it! And what’s the score by the way?

– It’s nil to one, ours lead. The blacks can still score one goal at least – they have time, and then the game will end in a draw, which will be great luck for the blacks. I do not think they can win.

– I see. Ok, then, I wish your team luck. I will be cheering for them too. Call me after the match, I’m curious about the results.

– Sure. Call you later. Bye.

e) Now make up your own dialogues on the following situations:

1) You watched a sport event, which your friend couldn’t see. Answer your friends questions about the event, speak about the most interesting moments, express your opinion about the sportsmen and the work of their coach.

2) Interview a famous sportsman. Speak about his/ her life, sports career, the influence of sport on his/ her life and health. Ask about his/ her family and their attitude to his/her life style and achievements. Ask about the early times, the recent achievements, dreams and plans for the future.

3) You are parents choosing a sport for your child to go in for. Discuss your child’s abilities and character, and the good and bad sides of taking up this or that kind of sport.
