Banking in Great Britain
1.
One hundred years ago the United Kingdom was the leading
manufacturing, trading and shipping country in the
world. Today
it has had the world’s fourth largest economy after the USA, Ja-
pan and Germany.
2.
The UK’s long history as a leader in world trade has always made
its bankers, investors, traders and insurance experts look overseas
for business. And so even when the UK's share of visible world
trade slipped back, UK financial skills and experience were
needed by other countries.
As modern communications have made it easier for countries to
trade with each other in recent years, the importance of UK finan-
cial services has become even more marked.
3.
Modern banking began in London in the 1600s. The goldsmiths
of that time built strong vaults to protect their stocks of gold and
silver. By the late 1800s UK banks carried out their business
across the globe.
4.
In London today you will still find some of the great names of
19
th
century banking and finance on display. Most have become
parts of larger groups, many of them foreign-owned, as a conse-
quence of globalization and market reforms. The UK’s share of
world trade has fallen but not its role in helping to finance that
trade.

What is Globalization
1.
The term «globalization» has acquired considerable emotive
force. Some view it as a process that is beneficial — a key to fu-
ture world economic development. Others regard it with hostility,
believing that it increases inequality within and between nations,
threatens employment and living standards and thwarts social
progress.
2.
Globalization offers extensive opportunities for truly worldwide
development but it’ is not progressing evenly. Some countries are
becoming integrated into the global economy more quickly than
others. Countries that have been able to integrate are seeing faster
35
growth and reduced poverty. Outward-oriented policies brought
dynamism and greater prosperity to much of East Asia, transform-
ing it from one of the poorest areas of the world 40 years
ago.
And as living standards rose, if became possible to make progress
on democracy and economic issues such as the environment and
work
standards.
3.
By contrast, in the 1970s and 1980s when many countries in Latin
America and Africa pursued inward-oriented policies, their
economies stagnated or declined, poverty increased and high in-
flation became the norm. In many cases, especially Africa, exter-
nal developments made the problems worse. As these regions
changed their policies, their incomes have begun to rise.
4.
The crises in the emerging markets in the 1990s have made it
quite evident that the opportunities of globalization do not come
without risks -risks arising from — capital movements and the
risks of social, economic and environmental degradation created
by poverty. This is not a reason to reverse direction, but for all
conserned in developing countries, in the advanced countries, and
of course investors — to embrace policy changes to build strong
economies and a stronger world financial system that will pro-
duce more rapid growth and ensure that poverty is reduced.
