Дзен. В то время как теория обучения фиксирована на процессе изменения,
Дзен концентрируется на принятии момента, акцептировании себя и окружающего мира. Принятие реальности, которую невозможно или очень трудно изменить, способно смягчить страдание. Нужно "остановиться", задуматься, оценить себя и окружающую реальность отстранённо неэмоционально, и такой подход способен даже стимулировать к формированию плана дальнейшего изменения.
Диалектика. Linehan (1993) анализирует три характеристики диалектического мышления и поведения, которые должны сформировать у себя такие лица:
1) Принцип Взаимосвязи и Целостности.
2) Принцип Полярности.
3) Принцип Постоянного Изменения.
Принцип Взаимосвязи и Целостности важен в связи с диффузной идентичностью и фрагментарностью Self'а. Акцентируется положение о том, что люди и объекты не могут оцениваться по их фрагментам, не принимая во внимание отношений между отдельными частями.
Принцип Полярности. Подчёркивается свойственное природе существование противоположных сил, идей, элементов. Необходим синтез, интеграция, так как каждая полярность имеет какую-то цель и открытый или скрытый смысл. Даже дезадаптивное поведение на чём- то основано.

Принцип Постоянного Изменения. Люди влияют, воздействуют друг на друга, всё взаимосвязано и находится в состоянии изменения, в процессе межличностных коммуникаций каждый из участников контакта изменяется. Пациентка/пациент во взаимном контакте с терапевтом используют как ориентированную на Принятие, так и ориентированную на
Изменение терапевтические стратегии.
Пациентки/пациенты обучаются навыкам, ориентированным на усвоение подходов Принятия и Изменения.
