PREFACE

Non-finite Verb Patterns

is designed for intermediate and upper-

intermediate learners of English and aims to help them improve their grammar
competence and learn to use appropriate words in appropriate structures for the
purpose of making meaningful messages in English. This is achieved in various
ways through about seventy varied and stimulating practice exercises.

Presented in a clear, user-friendly style, the practice book is logically di-

vided into three chapters, each of which introduces and further details an essen-
tial grammar topic. Chapter 1 is assigned to the pattern ‘Finite Verb + Infini-
tive’; Chapter 2 focuses on the pattern ‘Finite Verb + Gerund’. Inside each of
these chapters there are two principal sections: Section A deals with the form
and meaning of the sentence type and Section B details variations of the basic
pattern. In Chapter 3 verbs which can be followed by either infinitives or ger-
unds are presented and practiced in opposition.

Non-finite Verb Patterns

maintains an inductive approach, and teaches

students to analyze a wealth of contexts provided and make conclusions about
the tendencies or rules of using English verbs. This is then reinforced through a
range of activities to practice the grammar, including gap-filling, completion,
matching, rephrasing and editing (proofreading, or error analysis) through to
translation and guided communicative tasks, all of which help students internal-
ize and master the new patterns. The book features grammar summary tables for
students to complete and thus revise what they have learnt.

The practice book will prepare students for more advanced grammar

courses as well as Use of English tests. It is intentionally flexible in design and is
suitable for self-study, homework or use in class.
