THE GERUND

Герундий представляет собой неличную глагольную форму; выражающую название действия и обладающую как свойствами существительного, так и свойствами глагола.

Обладая свойствами существительного, герундий может служить в предложении:

1. Подлежащим:

Reading is her favourite occupation.

Чтение - ее любимое занятие.

2. Именной частью составного сказуемого:

Her greatest pleasure is reading.

Ее самое большое удовольствие - это чтение.

3.Частью составного глагольного сказуемого:

Не finished reading the book.

Он закончил читать книгу.

4.Прямым дополнением:

I remember reading it.

Я помню, что читал это.

5.Предложным косвенным дополнением:

I am fond of reading.

Я люблю чтение (читать).

6.Определением:

I had the pleasure of reading in the newspaper of your success.

Я имел удовольствие прочесть в газете о вашем успехе.

7.Обстоятельством:

After reading the letter I put in into the drawer.

После того как я прочел письмо (прочитав письмо), я положил его в ящик стола.


Глагольные свойства герундия выражаются в следующем:

1. Герундий может иметь прямое дополнение:

I remember reading this book .- Я помню, что читал эту книгу.

2. Герундий может определяться наречием.

Не likes reading aloud.- Он любит читать вслух.

3. Герундий имеет формы времени и залога:

Ex. 2. Open the brackets using the correct form of the Gerund.


1. He remembered (cross) the road, but he didn't remember (knock down). 2. I am still hungry in spite of (eat) four sandwiches. 3. He got into the house by (climb) through a window, without (see) by anyone. 4. He woke up at 7 a.m. in spite of (work) late. 5. He complained of (give) a very small room at the back of the hotel. 6. The little girl isn't afraid of dogs in spite of (bite) twice. 7. The baby went to sleep a few minutes after (feed). 8. The little girl never gets tired of (ask) her mother questions, but her mother often gets tired of (ask) so many ques­tions. 9. Mary was chosen to fill the vacancy. She was very pleased (choose). 10. I always treat people politely and I insist on (treat) politely. 11. The boy was very thirsty in spite of (drink) a big cup of tea.

Ex. 3. Replace the italicized parts of the sentence or clauses by gerundial phrases.

Model: He said all this and he did not even smile.

He said all this without even smiling.

1. We suspected that the boy was lying. 2. Nobody could tell when they were going to return 3. She did not want to make an effort. 4. It is necessary to brush the coat. 5. It was impossible to reason with her when she felt like this. 6. She was very clever, she could turn an old dress into a new one. 7. Единственным сохранившимся в английском языке падежом существительных, образуемых при помощи окончания, является так называемый Притяжательный падеж (Possessive Case). Во всех других случаях существительное находится в общем падеже (Common Case), имеющем нулевое окончание.
