My wife and children are on holiday at the moment, so I am home alone because I could not get the time off. Of course, the house is empty during the day and last week someone burgled it. I feel absolutely terrible, as if it was my fault. I am sure everything was secure - I had locked all the doors and windows and the dog was there.
They … through the backdoor. The police say they put some meat with sleeping pills through the letterbox and when the dog had fallen asleep they went in. They searched the whole house and they … all our electrical equipment like the TV, hifis, the children's computer, also my wife's jewellery and so on. It was a professional job - there were no fingerprints. Nothing to help us find out who could have … .
The police are investigating and they have spoken to all my neighbours. One neighbour … the police … that there was a strange person in our road all the time with a hat pulled low over his face several days before the break-in. The police sent a patrol car round, but they couldn't see anything or anyone suspicious.
Considering the stranger and some unexplained footprints they found in my garden, they think the thieves… the house for several days before … .
I am really afraid they will … it, because so many criminals nowadays do. The footprints are not clear, there are no fingerprints, no one saw anyone they can identify, so unless the police find our possessions when they raid a criminal's hideout, we won't see our things again.

3. Exceptions
Are you a pessimist or an optimist? Let’s find it out! Below you will find a number of issues to express your opinion on. First give a generalizing statement using the following gambits:
In general; Generally speaking; As a rule; By and large; In my experience; in most cases
Then try and find an exception to the rule using these phrases:
There are exceptions, of course; One exception is; But what about; But don’t forget
E.G. In general, British winters are pretty cold and dismal. (pessimistic statement) – They certainly can be, but there are exceptions, of course. Winters in the south can be very mild. (optimistic statement)
Ideas:
Russian cars / German cars / men /women / summer / winter / pop stars / politicians / teachers / dogs / cats / Americans / actors / money / hamburgers
Possible comments:
Optimistic: good value; exciting; dry; hardworking; dependable; warm; friendly; tasty…
Pessimistic: very depressing; unreliable; never work hard; can’t be trusted; stupid; too expensive; tell lies…
Now analyze your answers. If you have more optimistic generalizing statements you are an optimist, an vice versa.
§ 6. Причастие. The participle.
Причастие – последнее звено в цепочке ваших новых друзей. Вы уже знаете, что формы причастия 1 и герундия совершенно одинаковы, правда, в отличие от герундия, причастие любит свои перфектные формы и никогда не пренебрегает ими:
Having heard the truth, the ogre realized his mistake. – Услышавправду, людоедосозналсвоюошибку.
Having been accused of stealing the sausage, the cat tried to justify his actions. –

The weather being cold, the dwarf decided not to go to the lake.
The door being locked, the witch couldn’t get in.
