G RAS P T H E G RA M M A R
In the picture story, there are two n ew
impersonal verbs:
(mihi) placet
an d
(tibi) licet.
The literal tran slation of these two verbs is "it is pleasin g (to me)"
an d "it is permitted (for you)".
But people don 't talk like that! Our tran slation in to En glish n eeds to soun d
n atural as well as bein g accurate. So it's much better to tran slate these verbs
as "I wan t" an d "you can " or "you are allowed" .
